kirigami lets engineers create flat sheets that pop into complex 3d forms, but designing the cut pattern for a desired shape is hard. the deployment is nonlinear, and cuts must follow strict rules to avoid overlap and stay compatible. a team introduced rl-kirigami, which pairs optimal-transport conditional flow matching with reinforcement learning. the flow matching part learns a prior over ratio fields that describe cut densities, while a marching decoder ensures the final pattern is globally compatible.
the reinforcement learning step uses group relative policy optimization to fine-tune the generator. it optimizes for nondifferentiable goals like how well the deployed silhouette matches the target, whether the design is physically feasible, and how smooth the ratio field is. in tests on procedurally generated shapes, a single sample from the pretrained prior reached 94.2% silhouette intersection over union, beating solver-based methods. the approach also cut design time sharply compared to traditional optimization.
