current ai operates as a public-private partnership with $400 million in committed funding from the french government, ford foundation, macarthur foundation, deepmind, and salesforce. ceo ayah bdeir, formerly of mozilla and littlebits, says every major ai system belongs to a private company. she argues there must be a public alternative, like the world wide web, available to anyone for free. half the world's spoken languages face extinction, and english-driven models leave many communities behind.
the nonprofit's first grant round deployed $3.2 million to four organizations in kenya, lebanon, and the brazilian amazon. projects include building ai datasets for over 50 african languages, digitizing arab cultural history, and creating offline ai tools with indigenous amazon communities. current ai also launched alpha chat, an open-source chatbot built in seven weeks by a coalition including hugging face and mozilla. a deal with sakana ai will develop a shared open-source stack for japanese and global south communities.
