Google Research and Google DeepMind advanced AMIE, their research medical AI system, to handle real-time clinical video consultations. Built on Gemini and Project Astra, AMIE uses a multi-agent architecture to interpret visual and auditory cues, guide virtual physical exams, and reason diagnostically. In a randomized study with simulated patient actors, clinical evaluators assessed AMIE’s performance against primary care physicians across history-taking, diagnostic accuracy, management, and communication.
Evaluators rated AMIE favorably on core clinical competencies. Patient actors also preferred the video experience over text chat. However, the study used simulated consultations with actors, not real patients, and the system remains a research prototype. Google states more research is needed before any responsible real-world clinical deployment. The results are promising but do not yet prove safety or effectiveness in actual practice.
AMIE extends earlier work on medical dialogue systems by adding multimodal perception, moving beyond text to interpret visual and auditory signals. This builds on advances in large language models and real-time AI assistants. While the demonstration shows expert-level capabilities in a controlled setting, regulatory approval and rigorous clinical trials would be required before any use in patient care. The work highlights both progress and the gap between research and deployment.
