Over the weekend, Reddit users discovered that Claude shared chats and Artifacts were publicly searchable on Google. By using search operators like “site:claude.ai/share,” they found conversations containing health records, private company documents, and children’s names and phone numbers. The exposure stemmed from Claude’s “share chat” feature, which creates links that let anyone with the URL view a conversation. Anthropic’s interface warns that anyone with the link can view the content, implying it is meant for small groups, not the entire internet.
Anthropic stated that share links only appear in search results when posted on public forums or social media, and that privately sent links stay out of search. The company does not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines. Before the issue was fixed, Futurism reported finding medical reports, clinical trial results with patient names, internal company documents, and employee reviews with personal information. Exposed Artifacts included code and work notes. A test search by TechCrunch on Monday afternoon returned no results, suggesting remediation.
This is not the first such incident. Last year, Forbes reported hundreds of Claude chats indexed by search engines, with Google estimating just under 600 conversations before they disappeared. Also last year, a researcher scraped around 100,000 publicly shared ChatGPT conversations. Google noted that it respects site owners’ directives to control indexing. Users can review their shared chats in Claude’s settings under Privacy. The incident highlights the risk of assuming shared links remain private when they can be discovered and indexed if posted publicly.
